Late in life Bouguereau still rose at dawn six days a week and painted until nightfall, often finishing twenty or more pictures in a year. Born in La Rochelle in 1825, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and won the Prix de Rome on his third try. He showed at the Paris Salon for his whole working life, and American millionaires bought his work eagerly. The Impressionist avant-garde reviled him, and his art fell out of favour after 1920. A revival of interest in figure painting brought him back in the 1980s. Browse 124 works by William-Adolphe Bouguereau from 92 museums, free to download in HD.
