Hollar measured his working time with a sand-glass and charged fourpence an hour. He was born in Prague, and after the Sack of Prague ruined his family he gave up a legal career to become an artist. The Earl of Arundel noticed him and took him to England in 1637. There he etched views of London after the Great Fire and illustrated books for booksellers. He died in London in 1677, so poor that he asked the bailiffs not to take his bed. Browse 1,181 works by Wenceslaus Hollar from 16 museums, free to download in HD.
