Virgil Solis worked in Nuremberg, the city where he was born in 1514. He was a printmaker, and his woodcuts mostly ended up as book illustrations. His woodcuts for Ovid were reprinted and copied in many editions, though some borrowed from earlier pictures by the French artist Bernard Salomon. Many prints signed by him are probably by assistants, and Jost Amman worked for him before starting his own workshop. After Solis died in 1562, his widow married his assistant and kept the workshop going into the early seventeenth century. Browse 181 works by Virgilius Solis from 7 museums, free to download in HD.
