In 1849 Utagawa Yoshitora made a print of three warlords pounding rice cakes for the shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Censors read it as a jab at authority and kept him in manacles for fifty days. Soon after, he was expelled from the studio of his teacher Utagawa Kuniyoshi, possibly because of that print. He kept working anyway, producing over 60 print series and illustrating more than 100 books. In 1871 he made a print of a steam train in Tokyo, though the line didn't open until the next summer, so he probably worked from imagination.
