Sekiguchi Shinsuke, the son of an Edo bookseller, began training under Torii Kiyomitsu in 1765 at the age of 14. He took the art name Torii Kiyonaga and became head of the Torii school two years after his teacher died. Many of his early works were billboards and pictures of actors, based on his visits to kabuki theatres. In the 1780s he made a great many prints of beautiful women, often on larger sheets and as two- or three-sheet sets. When Utamaro became the lead artist for these prints in 1794, Kiyonaga turned to surimono, book illustrations and paintings.
