Gainsborough often painted his landscapes at night by candlelight. His model was a tabletop arrangement of stones and bits of mirror. He was born in Sudbury in Suffolk and went to London to study art in 1740. He earned his living with portraits for years, but a letter from his time in Bath says he was sick of them. In 1774 he moved to London, where he later painted King George III and Queen Charlotte. Browse 163 works by Thomas Gainsborough from 41 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
