Thomas Eakins spent most of his life in Philadelphia and painted its people from life. After studying in Paris with Jean-Léon Gérôme, he came home and painted rowers, surgeons and his own family. In The Gross Clinic a surgeon operates before a crowd of students, and the public didn't warm to the blood. He taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts until 1886, when he was forced to resign for removing a male model's loincloth in front of female students. About eight hundred photographs are now attributed to Eakins and his circle. Browse 120 works by Thomas Eakins from 36 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
