Géricault learned the anatomy and movement of horses in the palace stables at Versailles, which were open to him. Born in Rouen, he copied Rubens, Titian, Velázquez and Rembrandt at the Louvre. His best-known painting, The Raft of the Medusa, shows the aftermath of a French shipwreck whose captain left the crew and passengers to die. It caused a political row at the Paris Salon of 1819 and was praised in England the next year. Weakened by riding accidents and a chronic tubercular infection, he died in Paris in 1824 at 32.
