Theodor de Bry

Theodor de Bry never crossed the Atlantic, yet his engravings shaped how Europe pictured the Americas. Born in Liège, he learned engraving from his father and grandfather, who were jewellers. He became a Protestant and was banished in 1570. After years in Strasbourg and Antwerp, he lived in London, where he began collecting explorers' stories and pictures.
