In Tahiti, swarms of flies ate Sydney Parkinson's paint while he worked. Joseph Banks hired him for James Cook's first voyage to the Pacific in 1768, to draw what Banks and Daniel Solander collected. In a small cabin crowded with hundreds of specimens, he made nearly a thousand drawings of plants and animals. He was born in Edinburgh, the son of a Quaker brewer, and his flower paintings were shown at exhibitions before the voyage. He died of dysentery at sea in January 1771, on the way to Cape Town.
