Stanisław Wyspiański often drew his children sleeping or eating, and he worked most often in soft pastel. He was born in Kraków in 1869, and the painter Jan Matejko gave him his first artistic guidance as a boy. In France he studied at the Académie Colarossi and got to know Paul Gauguin. Back in Kraków he designed stained glass windows and polychromes for the Franciscan Church, and he wrote plays such as The Wedding. He died of syphilis in Kraków in 1907, aged 38.
