Simone Cantarini once threw a painting against the wall after Guido Reni criticized it in front of other students, according to some stories. He was born in Pesaro and probably joined Reni's studio in Bologna around 1634, where he learned to etch. After the break he went back to Pesaro, and after Reni's death in 1642 he opened his own studio in Bologna's Palazzo Zambeccari. He painted mostly religious subjects and portraits, and 37 etched plates are securely attributed to him. He became seriously ill and died in Verona in 1648.
