Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita
120 works
At fourteen, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was turned down by the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, so he trained in architecture and then as a teacher.
He is known mainly for his wood engravings of birds, exotic animals, plants and fantastical scenes. In Haarlem he taught nature drawing and graphic arts, and M. C. Escher was one of his pupils. After the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940, poor health kept him secluded and he worked mostly in sketches. In 1944 he and his wife Elisabeth were taken from their home in Watergraafsmeer and killed at Auschwitz. Browse 120 works by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita from one museum, free to download in HD.
