Rudolf von Alt painted the Austrian Alps and northern Italy in watercolour, in a very realistic and detailed style. A visit to Venice in 1833 turned him toward architecture as well, and his interior views later brought him attention in Vienna. He was born in Vienna, the son of the lithographer Jakob Alt. He worked for a while in Rome and Naples and went to the Crimea in 1863 to paint views of an estate of the Empress. Born Rudolf Alt, he was knighted in 1889 and later died in Vienna.
