Political caricatures of Louis XIV and prints backing William of Orange are what Romeyn de Hooghe is best known for. He was born in Amsterdam and worked as an etcher and painter, but he also made sculptures and medals. He produced over 3500 prints before he died in Haarlem in 1708. Houbraken disliked his dissolute life and thought some of his later subjects were a disgrace to the profession. The historian Simon Schama saw it differently and called him the first great modern graphic satirist. Browse 555 works by Romeyn de Hooghe from 10 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
