After a family row left him homeless in Paris, Rodolphe Bresdin fell in with Charles Baudelaire, Henri Murger and Victor Hugo. Later he walked 678 kilometres to Toulouse and lived in the open air and in fishermen's huts. He made 140 etchings and 20 lithographs, full of strange details that attracted writers like Huysmans and André Breton. Odilon Redon was his pupil and thought Bresdin's series on the Holy Family's flight to Egypt was his best work. Bresdin died in a garret room in Sèvres in 1885.
