Carlo Maratti saw some of Robert van Audenaerde's prints and told him to give himself entirely to engraving. Audenaerde was born in Ghent in 1663 and went to Rome at twenty-two to study under Maratti. Most of his prints copy Maratti's pictures, and he also engraved works after Bernini, Mantegna and Pietro da Cortona. He still painted for the churches of Ghent, including the high altarpiece of the Carthusian church. He came home after a reported thirty-seven years away and died in Ghent in 1748.
