Robert Nanteuil drew 155 of his 221 portraits from life. He was born in Reims and learned engraving from his brother-in-law Nicolas Regnesson. He moved to Paris in 1647. Within ten years Louis XIV had given him a pension and made him designer and engraver of the king's cabinet. His influence was the main reason the king granted the edict of 1660, which set engraving apart from the mechanical arts and gave engravers the privileges of other artists.
