Robert Frederick Blum went to Japan in 1890 and spent three years there. He was born in Cincinnati and worked for a time in a lithographic shop. After he settled in New York, his pen-and-ink work for the Century Magazine drew wide attention. In 1893 he showed The Ameya at the National Academy of Design and was elected a full member on the strength of that canvas. His frieze Music and the Dance went missing when Mendelssohn Hall was demolished, but it was later found in the vaults of the Brooklyn Museum.
