In London, Earlom tried to copy the paintings on the lord mayor's state coach, which Giovanni Battista Cipriani had just decorated. He was then sent to study under Cipriani, and he learned mezzotint on his own. In 1765 the publisher John Boydell hired him to draw the pictures at Houghton Hall and engrave them in mezzotint. Boydell later had him copy all 200 of Claude Lorrain's drawings as prints, collected as Liber Veritatis in 1777. Drawing teachers recommended these prints as models for copying, and they influenced English watercolour artists such as Francis Towne.
