Reinier Nooms came to art after a rough, drunken life as a sailor. He started painting and drawing in 1643, and nobody knows how he learned his skill. His ships are shown with high accuracy and in great detail, and other artists used them as examples. He visited Paris and Venice and went along the coast of North Africa with Michiel de Ruyter. In the 1650s he made a series of etchings of ships and city views, and his Paris etchings later inspired the French etcher Charles Meryon.
