Born near Perugia in 1635, Pietro Santi Bartoli moved to Rome as a youth and studied painting under Jean Lemaire and Poussin. He soon gave up painting to work entirely as an engraver. His plates faithfully recorded Roman ruins, bas-reliefs and frescoes, and his prints of Trajan's Column and the Column of Marcus Aurelius were frequently reprinted. After Bellori's death he became papal antiquarian and antiquarian for Queen Christina of Sweden. He died in Rome in 1700 and was buried in San Lorenzo in Lucina beside Poussin.
