Born in Bolsward in 1706, Pieter Tanjé worked as a shipmate on the boat service to Amsterdam, the RKD says. In his spare time he engraved designs for snuff boxes, and they did so well that Jacob Folkema encouraged him to enroll at the Amsterdam Stadsacademie. He joined at 24 and studied under Bernard Picart, Jacob Houbraken, Cornelis Troost and Jacob de Wit. In 1750 he engraved over 100 plates for Johan van Gool's book of artist biographies, Nieuw Schouburg, most of them after portrait sketches by Aart Schouman. He died in Amsterdam in 1761.
