In 1795 Brepols went to Turnhout with Pieter Corbeels, a printer from Leuven, as his assistant and apprentice. They may have been fleeing the French military, which then occupied the Austrian Netherlands. Corbeels was executed for fighting the French, and his widow ran the business for a short while. From 1800 Brepols gradually took over the house and the printing business. He published popular prints such as catchpenny prints and devotionalia, and later owners hand-coloured many of the black and white sheets.
