Born in The Hague, Zilcken took up etching and lithography in 1875 while working for Princess Sophie of the Netherlands. He went on to make more than 700 pieces and helped found the Nederlandsche Etsclub. In 1892 he and his friend Jan Toorop welcomed the poet Paul Verlaine to The Hague, and Zilcken made several portraits of him. His trips to Algeria and later Egypt led to Orientalist work and two travel books. He retired to the French Riviera and died in Villefranche-sur-Mer in 1930.
