A former student heard from an Otira resident that Petrus van der Velden went into the Otira Gorge whenever thunder rolled and rain poured. On sunny days he slept on the grass near the hotel. Born in Rotterdam, he trained as a lithographer and painted genre scenes in and near The Hague. He moved to New Zealand in 1890 at the age of 53, and nobody knows exactly why. He made only two sketching trips to Otira but returned to its subjects many times until his death in Auckland in 1913.
