Paul Gavarni started out in a machine factory and took drawing classes in the evenings to get ahead. Born Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier in Paris in 1804, he later worked as a draughtsman for the Government Ordnance Department. The story is that he took his pen name from Gavarnie, in the Pyrenees. He drew for Le Charivari and soon wrote his own captions, because he didn't like the ones the editors added. His prints poked fun at Parisian youth, then at family life, and he was once jailed for debt at Clichy before his death in 1866.
