Veronese took his name from Verona, where his father worked as a stonecutter. He moved to Venice in 1553 after winning his first state commission, ceiling frescoes in the Doge's Palace. He's best known for huge biblical feasts crowded with figures, painted for monastery refectories. One of these, a Last Supper he finished in 1573, brought him before the Venetian Inquisition over the German soldiers in the scene. The tribunal found no heresy but made him rename it The Feast in the House of Levi. Browse 116 works by Paolo Veronese from 44 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
