Okumura Masanobu opened his own print shop in Edo about 1721. It was called Okumura-ya, and he stamped its gourd-shaped sign on the works he printed. He seems to have taught himself to paint, and he isn't known to have belonged to any school. His early prints follow the Torii school, but he later made comic albums, lacquer-effect urushi-e prints and tall pillar prints. He probably died in 1764, though 1769 has also been given.
