Most of Ohara Koson's prints show birds and flowers, and he made around 500 of them. He was born Ohara Matao in Kanazawa in 1877 and later took the name Koson, meaning "son of Kason", after his teacher Suzuki Kason. While teaching at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts he met Ernest Fenollosa, who later asked him to send many bird-and-flower prints to the United States. His prints sold well there, but he was so little known in Japan that his work had to be reimported when it caught on from 1970. He died at his home in Tokyo in 1945.
