For years Odilon Redon drew almost only in charcoal and lithography, dark works he called his noirs. He was born in Bordeaux in 1840 and fought in the Franco-Prussian War before moving to Paris. He stayed fairly unknown until his drawings turned up in the novel À rebours by Joris-Karl Huysmans in 1884. Later he moved to pastel and oil, and he made no more noirs after 1900. His dreamlike paintings from the next decade drew on Japanese art and leaned toward abstraction. Browse 448 works by Odilon Redon from 38 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
