Charlet lost his job in the Paris city administration in 1816 after fighting at the Barrière de Clichy with the National Guard. He then entered the studio of the painter Baron Gros and began issuing lithographs. His Grenadier de Waterloo of 1817 carried the motto "The Guard Dies and Does Not Surrender", a phrase often credited to Cambronne, who never said it. About 2000 lithographs followed, along with watercolours, sepia drawings and oil sketches. Military scenes came first, but later sets showed town life and children, among them the 50 lithographs of Caporal Valentin.
