Poussin ran away to Paris at eighteen, and his parents apparently didn't want him to paint. He reached Rome in 1624 and spent most of his working life there. Most of his pictures were religious or mythological subjects painted for a small group of Italian and French collectors. In 1640 he went back to Paris as First Painter to the King, but he left after little more than a year. In his later years landscape took a bigger place in his work, and he died in Rome in 1665.
