Nicholas Chevalier travelled with the explorer Georg von Neumayer through remote parts of Victoria, and those trips led to his painting of Mount Arapiles. Born in St Petersburg to a Russian mother, he worked in Australia and New Zealand. His 1864 painting The Buffalo Ranges was the first picture of an Australian subject to enter the National Gallery of Victoria. He also designed a dress for Lady Barkly, the governor's wife, though she seems never to have worn it. Mount Chevalier in Canterbury, New Zealand, is named after him.
