Michał Stachowicz painted the history happening around him in Kraków, and he saw many of those events himself. His best known works include Kościuszko's Oath on the Market Square and The Entrance of Prince Józef Poniatowski into Kraków. In 1816 Bishop Jan Paweł Woronicz asked him to paint the walls of the Bishop's Palace, a job that took two years. Fire destroyed those paintings thirty-two years later. He also made portraits, religious pictures and lithographs, and he taught at Saint Barbara's gymnasium from 1817 until his death.
