Matthijs Balen spent ten years in The Hague from 1705, but he was born and died in Dordrecht. The RKD lists him as a registered pupil of Arnold Houbraken, and like his teacher he made prints as well as paintings. He is known for Italianate landscapes and portraits. He also painted historical allegories. He was probably the son or grandson of the Dordrecht writer Mathias Balen, who wrote Beschryvinge der stad Dordrecht in 1677.
