Martinus Rørbye went north to Norway and Sweden and south to Italy, Greece and Constantinople. He was born in Drammen, Norway, in 1803 to Danish parents and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His studies from Greece and Turkey brought him public attention, and the Academy voted him in unanimously in 1838. He was the first Danish painter to work in Skagen, almost half a century before the Skagen Painters came to fame there. Men of Skagen on a summer evening in fair weather was one of his last paintings, and he died in Copenhagen in 1848. Browse 113 works by Martinus Rørbye from 13 museums, free to download in HD.
