Martin Bernigeroth came to Leipzig in 1685 from Friesdorf, a village in Saxony, and trained in the household of the copper engraver Erasmus Andresohn. He soon opened his own workshop and made portraits his speciality. About 1,600 engraved portraits are credited to him, and his clients came from the upper ranks of society well beyond Saxony and Thuringia. In 1707 he was appointed electoral copper engraver. He died in Leipzig in 1733, and his sons Johann Martin and Johann Benedict also worked as copper engravers. Browse 296 works by Martin Bernigeroth from 4 museums, free to download in HD.
