Boilly gave trompe-l'œil its name. At the Salon of 1800 he showed a painting of overlapping prints and papers under broken glass and called it Un trompe-l'œil. Critics laughed it off as a stunt, but the public loved it. He was born in La Bassée in northern France, taught himself to paint and moved to Paris around 1787. He painted about 5,000 portraits and many crowded, often funny scenes of urban middle-class life. Browse 156 works by Louis-Léopold Boilly from 33 museums, free to download in HD.
