In Italy, Leonaert Bramer was called Leonardo of the Night, and he's best known for night scenes with exotic costumes and settings. He left his home town of Delft at 18 and reached Rome in 1616, where he helped found the Bentvueghels group of Northern artists. Back in Delft by 1628, he painted murals and ceilings, and real frescos in the Civic Guard house and nearby palaces. None of those frescos survived the Dutch climate.
