Shunman was left-handed, and two of his art names use the character for "left." He was orphaned young and studied first with the poet and painter Katori Nahiko, then with the ukiyo-e artist Kitao Shigemasa. He made prints and paintings, and he also wrote novels and poetry. More than 70 of his paintings survive, more than any other artist of the Kitao school. In 1790 he stopped designing commercial prints to focus on deluxe commissioned ones, and he wrote poems for prints by Hokusai, Utamaro and Eishi.
