Utamaro made his name in Edo in the early 1790s with half-length portraits of women, their faces long and their features small. Little is known of his life, not even where he was born. He worked closely with the publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō and produced over 2000 known prints, along with illustrated books of insects. In 1804 he was manacled for fifty days over prints showing the military ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He died in Edo two years later, and his prints later reached France, where Monet and Degas collected them. Browse 530 works by Kitagawa Utamaro from 15 museums, free to download in HD.
