Shunshō first came to Edo to study haiku and painting, and his first actor prints date from 1760. He began in the Torii school but soon broke away, and his own style was later called the Katsukawa school. His prints of Kabuki actors showed large portrait-style heads and the insides of dressing rooms. In his prints you could tell for the first time which actor was playing a role. He painted many pictures of beautiful women but made very few prints of them. Browse 664 works by Katsukawa Shunshō from 12 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
