In 1804 the ukiyo-e artist Katsukawa Shun'ei spent 50 days jailed and manacled with Utamaro, Toyokuni and others. Their offence was making prints of Toyotomi Hideyoshi based on the Ehon taikōki. Shun'ei mostly designed portraits of kabuki actors, but he also made warrior prints and pictures of sumo wrestlers. As early as January 1794 he was making actor bust portraits on mica grounds, four months before the better-known ones by Sharaku. Around 1800 he took over the Katsukawa school from his teacher Shunshō, and his most prominent students were Shuntei and Shunsen.
