Ribera moved to Naples in late 1616 and stayed there for the rest of his life. He was born in Játiva in Spain and had worked in Parma and Rome, which Giulio Mancini says he left to avoid his creditors. In Naples he signed his work "Jusepe de Ribera, español" and ran a workshop with many pupils. He's perhaps best known for brutal scenes of martyrdom, but nearly half of his surviving work shows workers and beggars posing as saints and philosophers. His health declined from 1643, and he died in Naples in 1652. Browse 122 works by Jusepe de Ribera from 47 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
