At Great Yarmouth on the Norfolk coast, Cotman studied the shipping and learned to paint the form of sea waves. Years earlier he had left Norwich for London, probably in 1798, instead of joining his father's silk and lace business. On three trips to Normandy he drew the region's buildings, and his etchings for Architectural Antiquities of Normandy came out in 1822. He wasn't thought important during his lifetime and made little money from his work. Well over 2,000 of his works are now held in Norwich, where he was born in 1782.
