Flaxman started out modelling wax reliefs for Josiah Wedgwood's pottery in London, where his father sold plaster casts. In 1787 he went to Rome with his wife Nancy and stayed seven years. There he made his first book illustrations, designs for Homer, Dante and Aeschylus. Back in England he made funerary monuments for churches across the country. In 1810 the Royal Academy gave him a newly created post as Professor of Sculpture, and he died in London in 1826. Browse 147 works by John Flaxman from 6 museums, free to download in HD.
