Much of John Constable's work shows Dedham Vale, the countryside around his home on the border of Suffolk and Essex. He was born in East Bergholt in 1776, the son of a wealthy corn merchant who owned Flatford Mill. His father let him take up art in 1799, and he entered the Royal Academy Schools. The Hay Wain was shown at the Royal Academy in 1821 but didn't find a buyer. At the Paris Salon it won a gold medal, and Constable sold more in France than he did in England.
