In 1861 Grimshaw left his job as a clerk for the Great Northern Railway to become a painter, to his parents' dismay. He was entirely self-taught. He openly used a camera obscura or lenses to project scenes onto canvas, and some critics of his day doubted his pictures were paintings at all. He's best known for moonlit streets and docks in London, Hull, Liverpool and Glasgow. Whistler, who had a studio near his in Chelsea, said he thought he'd invented nocturnes until he saw Grimshaw's moonlit pictures.
