Jan Aarts worked mostly on engravings until about 1900, then took up other graphic methods. Born in The Hague, he trained at its Royal Academy of Art and drew farmworkers, dyke workers and later tramps and beggars. In the 1920s he made mostly visionary work with apocalyptic scenes. He moved to Amsterdam in 1911 and later became a professor at the Royal Academy there as Pieter Dupont's successor. He also wrote for the Hague newspaper Het Vaderland, made sculptures as studies for his graphic work and died in Amsterdam.
